Catherine's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.

Focusing on Love and Generosity

The central message of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a message before the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the charity, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
