Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials report early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.

Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
